Be Careful in Canals

Please be aware that the canal is littered with debris that could be dangerous.  Please be careful while boating, and refrain from letting children in the water.

Security Issues

Since Hurricane Ike theft has increased on the West End of the island.  In IDS we have had incidents of boat trailer and golf cart theft.  Please be mindful of your property, as well as your neighbors.

IDS Not Requiring Permits for Ike Damage

The Isla Del Sol Homeowners Association will not require permits to repair damage associated with Hurricane Ike as long as the original footprint of the structure remains the same. Significant changes to the original siding type or color, new fences, new shower enclosures, additions or modifications to decks or any other type structural additions will require a permit. If you have any questions please contact CKM or a IDSHOA board member. Click here for contact information.

Galveston Temporarily Lifts Permit Requirements

The city of Galveston has also waived building permits for damage caused by Ike. Please review the city policy listed below.

Earlier this week Mayor Thomas temporarily waived some of city’s buildings codes pertaining to the demolition and removal of storm damaged materials. Due to the severity of damage caused by Hurricane Ike’s wind, rain, and storm surge the City of Galveston will not require homeowners or contractors to apply for permits to demolish and remove the following: · Non-structural floor coverings, wall coverings and ceiling coverings · Cabinetry · Storm damaged materials on the interior of structures Exemptions do apply. The Mayor’s order does not pertain to the removal of any and all structural beams, piers, pilings, and materials. The City of Galveston previously adopted the 2006 International Building Code and the 2006 International Residential Code regulating the building, rebuilding, and restoration for all construction. The temporary waiver of these regulations is a necessary action the City must take to save lives, prevent injuries, protect property, and ensure public health and safety.

Guidelines for Debris Removal

Please use the following guidelines when cleaning out your home or business: · Everything must be brought out to the curb. Do NOT put materials in the alley. Please note, debris removal crews CANNOT come on to private property to collect debris. · Do NOT put materials in the street where piles could impede and endanger the flow of traffic. Put all materials in the public right-of-way. · In order to avoid possible damage, do NOT stack debris on or adjacent to water meters, fire hydrants, power or cable boxes, mail boxes, or city garbage carts.

City contractors will be making multiple pick ups so there will be ample opportunity to collect all of your storm debris. You do not need to haul your debris away yourself. · Only storm generated debris will be collected. Land clearing and/or reconstruction debris will NOT be collected. · You must sort your storm related debris into separate piles for each of the following categories:

In order to avoid contaminating other debris streams it is VERY IMPORTANT that household hazardous waste be kept separate from regular household garbage and storm debris. · You can continue to use your green city garbage cart for regular household trash.

Do NOT move sand. Sand will be collected, sifted, and returned to beach areas.

Electrical Power Reconnection

Isla Homeowners,

The following information about power restoration was obtained from my conversations with Centerpoint and the City of Galveston. If you have any questions please call or visit their websites. Please forward this to all Isla homeowners on your e-mail list. I will add it to the website.

I would recommend that if you have not already turned off your main breaker to your home that you do so before requesting power reconnection.

Below is a link to the flowchart from the City of Galveston for Power Restoration (requires Adobe Acrobat Reader to view).

Process Flow Chart

Isla homeowners need to make repairs to any physical damage or water submerged electrical circuits or components in their homes. This may require a qualified electrician. If you are not sure whether or not you have sustained any damage you should call a qualified electrician for an inspection. After repairs are completed, you or your electrician should call the city inspection number at 409-797-3660 to schedule an inspection. If it passes, the city inspector will call Centerpoint to connect your power.

If you had no rising water or physical damage or you had minor damage to your electrical components and have completed repairs yourself, you can call Centerpoint for status at 713-207-2222 or 1-800-332-7143 and request connection of your power. You do not need to call the city inspection department.

You may have noticed that all the fuses on the pole mounted transformers in the front or back of your home have been pulled and disconnected. These fuses typically power 2 - 4 homes. If your home is ready for reconnection of power and your neighbors on the same fuse still have problems or have not called for reconnect, Centerpoint will pull the electrical meters at your neighbors home so that your power can be restored.

Letter from Centerpoint Energy:  Surge Water Safety Restoration

Centerpoint Energy has a responsibility to ensure safe and reliable service for the public and communities we serve. In order to eliminate potential dangers resulting from energizing an electric service that has been submerged in sea water and/or has structural damage, CenterPoint Energy will not reconnect any service that meets either criteria until an inspection is made by the City of Galveston and a permit is issued to CenterPoint Energy.

Centerpoint Energy has worked closely with City of Galveston officials to develop a strategy, ensuring a safe restoration of power to individual electric services.  The following information explains the need for caution.

The National Electric Code which establishes minimum requirements for all electric wiring was created to prevent electrical hazards, including fires.
