The Great Galveston Free Tree Giveaway Returns this Saturday!

1,000 Tree Giveaway will Help Reforest Galveston Island

Islanders will be lining up early for the Great Galveston Free Tree Giveaway this Saturday, April 30, 2011.  Nearly 1,000 five-gallon trees will go home with happy residents.  Hurricane Ike devastated the Island’s lush tree canopy less than three years ago.  Since then Galvestonians have been busy planting new trees to replace what was lost.

WHAT:           The Great Galveston Free Tree Giveaway & Arbor Day Celebration
WHEN:           Saturday, April 30
8:00 AM until all trees are given away
WHERE:        Galveston City Hall – Back Parking Lots
                        26th Street & Ball

Stipulations:
▪         Trees will be given away on a first come, first serve basis.
▪         Limit two trees per address, not including fruit trees.
▪         Photo identification and a City utility bill with a Galveston address are required.
▪         Recipients must sign an agreement to plant in Galveston and care for the tree.
▪         Trees may only be planted on private property; not in the City’s right-of-way.

Cedar Creek Tree Farms and Tree Town USA have generously donated 500 trees each for the giveaway, bringing the total to 1,000 FREE trees for Galveston Island residents.  A variety of tree species, selected especially for Galveston, will be available at the giveaway.  Special thanks go to Cedar Creek Farms, Tree Town USA, TreeFolks, Apache, and Brothers L&L Services as well as the volunteers who coordinated this spring giveaway event.

The Galveston Island Tree Conservancy and Galveston Tree Committee have a set goal of planting 5,000 new trees annually on the Island for the next five years.
