Our Water Tower Story ...continued
The City was granted funding for a total of eight stimulus projects including; the Isla Del Sol EST, the Jamaica Beach EST, a sixteen inch waterline for 13 Mile Rd to Jamaica Beach, two pressure sustaining valves, sanitary sewer rehabilitation for 33rd Street, and the repaving of 21st and 23rd Streets between Broadway and Harborside Drive. The timeline associated with the stimulus projects is highly accelerated given the desired effect of the legislation. As I’m sure you are aware the City has historically had water conveyance issue with the West end of Galveston Island. In 2006 a second twelve inch waterline was installed from the Jamaica Beach Pump Station to the White Sands Elevated Storage Tank. This construction lessened the impact of peak usage periods such as; Memorial Day, 4th of July, & Labor Day. The construction of the Isla Del Sol and Jamaica Beach Elevated Storage Tanks in conjunction with the rehabilitation of the White Sands Elevated Storage Tank will provide the needed water storage and flow capacity to completely take care of both the fire protection and consumer needs of Galveston’s west end for many years to come. The construction of these projects will also lessen the amount of time needed to reestablish water service for the residents of the west end of Galveston Island after an event such as Hurricane Ike. It took as long as six weeks for certain parts of the west end to have water service provided to their homes after Ike. Upon completion of these projects that time should be shortened to days. To the right is a photo of a typical composite construction EST which is what is being built in both Isla Del Sol and Jamaica Beach. The top of the Isla Del Sol EST will be painted a blue very similar to that of the EST located at Stewart and 10 Mile Rd. |
